We travel, you work

Our time in San Pedro is unfortunately over. We must make our way to our next destination Bolivia and our hearts are tights. This little village and his surrounding were just incredible.


We decided to get a tour 4x4 to the Salar of Uyuni, which include 2 days in the national park: Eduardo Avaroa... We could have spent there 15 days. We went from incredible to paradisiac! There is so much beauty on this planet.



Our first day was full on; We visited Laguna blanca, Laguna verde, Laguna colorada, the Salvador Dalí desert and geysers Sol de Mañana.









Our first night was a little less incredible as we slept in a very basic accommodation with no water or heater... The night went down to -15 degrees! Thankfully we had wine at diner!
After waking up with ice on our eye lashes we started the day with coffee and pancakes made by the locals.
We were more than ready to attack day 2, which included árbol de piedra, Siloli desert, Lagunas ramaditas, honda, chiarcota, hedionda and Cañapa... And much more.






Our accomodation tonight is much better... Private room with no heater, but with water (unfortunately cold!!).

And finally we finished day 3 with the famous Salar de Uyuni.

After 5 flights, 1 very long bus a total of 96 hours travelling (our best so far!) we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama, little village at 2800 meter altitude, in the north of Chile.
What a massive change for us: a few days ago we were drinking kava with the locals in the middle of the Pacific, and we are now in a town where Zorro could just appear at any street corner, and it would feel so normal!
Our excitement is at it's maximum... We are finally back in the desert with what it gives you: amazing scenery and adventures...

Nous n'avons pas été abitués à tant de luxe depuis quelques jours... Nuit au camping, ce qui inclus chauffage dans notre roulotte, électricité, nettoyage du linge, bien sûr douches chaudes, et top du top, source thermal et jacuzzi inclus!
Après une grasse matinée (levé 7h30), nous voilà parti pour une longue journée de conduite. Nous n'atteignons notre destination qu'à 8 heure du soir, peu de temps pour trouver un bon spot pour la nuit. Après maintes recherches, 3 plages visitées (mais interdites de camping) nous avons échoué sur le parking d'un golf.
La nuit fût plutôt froide et quelques peu mouvementée! Cela fesait tellement de temps qu'Emma ne nous avait pas fait une petite crise nocturne: réveil en panique dans le même genre que le Serengeti!
Etant Dimanche, jour sacrée pour le golfer, le réveil fût plus que matinal! Nous quittons donc les lieux à 6 heure du matin sous les yeux bien étonnés de nombreux joueurs, direction Muriwai beach. Le thème de la journée: promenade et 'glandage'!

Réveil sur un des parking du centre ville! Nous sommes quand même bien blotis car entre un stade de rugby et un park à bains thermals. Malheureusement nous ne pourons profiter d'une bonne douche ce matin; bien que pas vraiment nécessaire car aujourd'hui nous partons visiter Wai-O-Tapu (les eaux sacrées), zone volcanique aux couleurs incroyables, qui abrite piscines, lacs, cratères, terraces minérales, bouches de vapeurs... Et bien sûr l'odeur sulfurique est des plus intenses!

'La baignoire du diable'! Que j'ai renommé un 'gros coeur pour ma soeur'!

Après une bonne nuit de sommeil au song des vagues de l'océan Pacifique, il est l'heure de prendre une douche... Et bien sûr qui dit camping sauvage, dit "douche sauvage?!". Nous voilà, a 6 heure du matin, serviette autour de la taille (du moins pour Cyril!), courant à la douche des plages, espérant trouver le courage de se laver sous une eau glaciale! On regarde à droite, puis à gauche, et nous voilà cul nu, heureusement couvert du vent marin par de hautes dunes! Et de là une vue imprenable: levé de soleil sur l'océan!



Petit déjeuner engouffré et nous voilà reparti, direction Rotorua. Nous longeons la côte est, traversons multiples villes et villages et s'arrétons de temps à autre admirer l'océan. Nous atteignons Mont Maunganui vers 11 heure du matin, ce qui nous permet de faire son tour à pied.



Nous suivons de nouveau le littoral et continuons notre parcours. L'air commence à s'imprégner d'une odeur putride! L'indication que nous nous rapprochons de notre destination finale. Rotorua est au coeur du 'Pacific Ring of Fire', au bord d'un lac à hautes activitées géothermales. Mais malheureusement l'odeur de souffre (très proche de l'oeuf pourri!) envahie la ville... Il paraît que l'on s'y fait!

Petite balade le long du lac s'impose. Nous passons d'abord par un petit village Mahori au coeur de la ville où nous pouvons déjà voir les effets géothermals: vapeurs bouillantes émanant de chaque sortie d'égouts, bains chaud au milieu de la place pour curer differentes maladies.



Nous continuons notre chemin direction Motutara, la baie de sulfure la plus au sud du lac qui abrite de nombreuse espèces d'oiseau. Il est l'heure de se trouver un endroit pour passer la nuit...

Ce matin nous voilà sur la côte est de la peninsule Coromandel. Les premiers paysages à découvrir sont extraordinaires... Et cela ne s'arrêtera pas tout le long de la journée!



Notre première étape: les plages à sources d'eau chaude. Ce n'est qu'après quelques mètres sur le sable doré, que nous apercevons une foule à têtes grises prenant des bains aux milieux des dunes! Une de ces dames prévient gentiment Cyril d'être vigilent: "lorsque vous voyez des bulles sortir du sable, c'est que c'est très chaud! Environ 60 degrés!". Tout le monde est muni d'une pelle et se fait sa petite baignoire. Une source d'eau se trouve sous nos pieds qui est elle-même chauffée par une couche de lave. On trempe donc les pieds un instant et préférons laisser à nos ainés le soin d'une cure de jeunesse.


Nous nous dirigeons vers Hanei, quelques kilomètres plus loin, d'où nous commençons un petit trek d'une heure pour 'Cathedral Cove'. C'est une assemblée de petite criques magnifiques d'où l'on peut faire de la plongée. Eau turquoise de l'océan pacifique, formation volcanique et vue sur les nombreuses îles de la Nouvelle Zélande. Ça vaut plutôt le coup!



De nouveau en voiture et nous voilà aux plages du Capitaine Cook où Cyril nous prépare un petit encas. Bien sûr nos copines les mouettes sont les premières au garde à vous; au cas ou on lacherait une miette!



De nouveau en voiture pour plus d'une heure de trajée avec des vues incroyables. Ce soir il n'est pas question de payer un campement; c'est sur un parking de bord de mer que l'on s'arrête.

Après un intérrogatoire digne de la CIA, et un fouillage poussée des douanes Kiwi, nous avons récupéré notre roulotte pour la semaine! Et nous voilà parti. Cyril la chemise déboutonnée et le bras par la fenêtre tel un vrai gitan! Emma pas douché de la veille, les cheveux presque jusqu'aux molets va guidé le fourgon jusqu'au prochain camp; tes os!



Il a bien sûr fallu 40 minutes, et non 10 minutes comme on nous l'avait assuré, pour atteindre notre campement... Et oui comme indiqué précédement, Emma fait le co-pilote... Ca promet!! Demain levé aux aurores, car une bonne journée nous attend.



Finallement nous décolons vers 8h30... première matinée, l'organisation n'est pas encore au top! Et nous voilà en panique, tout du moins Cyril: conduite à gauche, co-pilote n'ayant pas un grand sens de l'orientation, aucuns panneaux de signalisations... Mais finallement une idée émerge! Emma se rappelle des couchés de soleil passés avec Béné à Anglet... Ne me demandez pas la relation! Elle décide de suivre le soleil, se disant qu'il se lève à l'est. Et nous voilà reparti dans la bonne direction!!



Quelle merveille: les paysages défilent plus beaux les uns que les autres. On se croierait dans "le seigneur des anneaux". Il suffirait plus qu'un 'Hobit' sorte des fourrés! Pour 'Gandalf', on l'a déjà trouvé, vu le nombre de retraités à longue barbe blanche...

Nous arrivons à Kuaotunu vers 17h, juste le temps de trouver un campement avant le couché de


soleil.

"Good day, mate!" ...

...We can't mistake it; we are in Sydney!

After a very smooth journey on the underground, at our first step outside, we were welcomed by Sydney biggest icons: on the left Arbour Bridge and on the right the Opera House. A good introduction to Sydney before taking the ferry to Manly. Our dear friends from Africa, Paul and Fay, have been so kind to lend us their unit in one of the best spot of the city. It was the best accommodation we had so far on our trip!


Our first afternoon was memorable thanks to Emma's best Aussie friends: 2 kakatoes that landed on the balcony at 30cm from her face! And this birds are far to be our little European caged one. They are big as European eagle! And let's talk about the bat; they are even bigger! They cover Sydney sky at 6pm, like if they were announcing the arrival of Dracula!


We did everything we could to visit the city in 4 days: tour bus, walk by the beach and in town, and even a 20km trek from Manly to Sydney city centre in flip-flop! Paul and Fay joined us on day 4. They drove all the way from Waga-waga and gave us a fabulous tour of Sydney suburb. We just fell in love with this city! We wished to have more time to visit Australia, but unfortunately it was time to go. For sure we will be back!

As some of you noticed (or not) we are pretty late in our writing. We have visited so many places, absorb their cultures and chill out so much that we did not have time for writing. And if we had written every single things that happen, we will have nothing to share with you when we are back. You can think that we are lazy buggers, you are right!





















Next stop: Sydney (Australia)

It will be our last spot in Thailand before running to Malaysia...! Many tourist crossing Thailand are a little bit more organised and know the visa issue when you come to Thailand by land! We didn't! We only got a 15 days visa as we didn't fly in. Two options came to us, as an extension was absolutely out of question (price tripled last few months):
a) we would need to do a visa run (which would cost us transport in and out) or
b) we would go and spend a month in Malaysia. We thought that we could always come back another time to Thailand, being such easy to reach.
So our decision was made. We therefore went to the rivière Kwai knowing it would be our last stop in Thailand. We got one of this floating room on the river. Very nice but I got so sea sick with all the speed boat passing, that we had to check out and get a room on land! Our first visit was obviously the bridge.


Cyril couldn't stop whittling "the bridge on the river Kwai" song while crossing it! We then got our motorbike and decided to drive 70km to one of the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand. That was so painful but so worse it... On our way there we had one of the most amazing experience: some locals were making some big gestures and screaming to us in Thai to hurry up. Don't ask us how we understood that! Cyril started to hear some very deep sound and asked me to get the camera out of our bag ASAP. There it was; a wild elephant crossing the road and passing from one of the national park to the other. So rare, we were "gob smacked"!
We finally made it to the waterfall, after a good 2 hours drive. Yes, I know! Quiet slow! But after all the crazy driving of Vietnam and Cambodia, whenever Cyril go faster than 35km an hour, I scream at him to slow down!! And then he piss me off and go faster...! The 7 levels of the waterfall are just magical with clear blue water and many fishes that make you go insane whenever you put your feet on the water; they love dead skin and just "attack" you! Well at least you don't need pedicure anymore!


Then you have the monkeys. Oh dear, very cheeky ones! They wait for you to go in the water, to jump on your bag and check if their is any food to grab! But the worst is that if they cannot find anything, they drop your bag and all your belongings on the fall! And finally you have the forest spirit. Some specific old trees considered sacred, where locals make offerings. It's so surprising at first and finally so beautiful.


On our way back we stopped near by one of the station of the 'death railway'. Locals told us we could go by walking on it and get to the station. Just to be careful as the train always pass at a certain time.


We went and walked on this shaky old wooden bit hanged on the air! Well if the train can pass it, we can as well! We made it to the station and were well surprise to see a buddhist temple in one of the cave. We checked the time and decided to head back as the train would come within an hour. You didn't want to be on his way, and there is nowhere to jump! On our way back, we decided to follow the way on land instead of crossing back again the wooden bridge. After few minutes walking we started to hear a big whittle. And there it was, passing on top of our head: the train! We went so pale! And laugh so much...! We were so lucky!
Well every good thing has an end. Time again to pack our stuff and head to Malaysia. We took a 22 hours train to Kota Bahru! You cannot see any tourist on this train, this part of Thailand is avoided by everyone as clashes between Muslim and Buddhist happen daily, bombs have been found on train stations... We had so many militaries armed around us in our wagon, we felt pretty safe! Until the train stopped at 'Yala': The city, you never want to go to. The train was planned to be direct, but unfortunately we had to make a change. We had to wait 10 minutes for the transfer, in the home town of Muslim extremist. The army was hiding behind big sand bags bunkers with massive M16. And there we were surrounded by so many Ben Ladden look alike, staring at us...! No worries everything went fine again! And we finally made it to Malaysia!

On our way down to Bangkok, we decided to stop at Ayutthaya (former capital of Siam Empire). We spend there one day. Such a strange city, classified UNESCO heritage. We wondered around few street where we just watch out for all this crazy hordes of dogs wanting a bit of your legs! And then what we were looking for: beautiful temples all around.
